Larry Doby was a star with the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League, hitting .301 in 1943. In 1944, Doby enlisted in the Army and played for the black team at Naval Station Great Lakes near Chicago . Despite the fight against fascism abroad, military baseball remained segregated, with separate white and black teams for the Great Lakes. Doby would become the first black player in the American League in 1947, while Truman would end segregation in the U.S. Army in 1948.
